Summer Escape_03: Bantan Line local train and limited express'Hamasaka'

Upon arriving at Fukusaki Station, I didn't head straight for the ticket gates but instead took out my camera. The carriage we boarded terminates at Fukusaki. If to wait a while, the limited express “Hamasaka” would arrive. I found myself drawn to the layout of the two-sided, single-island platform with three tracks. Though it wasn't the agreed time for the shoot, Ms. Mi joined in, muttering, ‘I should have come dressed more smartly...’
Once, when visiting a solo exhibition by a photographer specialising in life-size dolls, I was asked if I had an interest in railways or station buildings.
The venue was a facility repurposed from an old station building.
Naturally, my interest lay with the silicone dolls; I explained I’d come to the exhibition drawn by the quiet, serene doll photography.
Yet, since my youth, I’d repeatedly dreamt of a certain station building.
Such a station probably doesn’t exist in reality.
Not in the city, but a small station in the countryside. Yet, a branch line exists that seems to originate from that station. In the dream, I am always waiting for someone, but the person never arrives, even after the time has passed.
A beautiful person who never arrives on time.
I recall having that dream repeatedly.
The dreams eventually ceased, and I no longer made appointments to meet anyone at stations. I suppose it will remain that way henceforth. Thinking that growing old is simply such a thing, I watched the limited express “Hamasaka” departing.
“In winter it’s crab, but in summer we have squid.”
I had been telling Ms. Mi such things.
福崎駅に到着後、すぐに改札口には向かわず、カメラを取り出した。
乗ってきた車両は福崎停まり。
暫く待てば、特急「はまさか」がやって来る。
単式・島式2面3線のプラットホームの様子にも心惹かれる。
約束の撮影時間ではなかったが、みさんが飛び入り参加してくれた。「もっと綺麗なかっこうで来たらよかった……」と呟きながら。
或る等身大ドールの写真家の個展に伺った際、鉄道や駅舎に興味がおありですかと訊かれたことがある。
古い駅舎を再利用した施設が会場だった。
むろん私の興味関心はシリコンドールにあり、静かで穏やかな人形写真の作品に心惹かれて、個展に伺ったことを告げた。
しかし、若い頃から、或る駅舎の夢を繰り返し見ていた。
そんな駅は実際には存在しないのだろうが。
都会ではなく、地方の小さな駅。それでも、その駅が起点となるような支線が存在する。夢の中で、私はいつも誰かを待っているのだが、相手は、時間を過ぎても現れない。
時間通りには、やってこない美しい人。
そんな夢を繰り返し見ていたのを思い出す。
夢はいつか見なくなり、駅で誰かと会う約束をすることもなくなった。
それは、この先も、そうなのだと思う。
老いていくということは、そんなものだと思いながら、特急「はまさか」を見送った。
「冬なら蟹だが、夏なら烏賊がありますよ。」
みさんには、そんなことを話していた。
