It was still early in the morning.
This time, I walked to the station.
Fukusaki has completely become a ‘town of monsters.’
Monster objects other than kappa are more noticeable than before. When viewed in the dim light, one of them is quite startling. However, the main surprise was seeing a half-naked young woman sitting with one knee raised at this time of day. I did not feel surprised by the obviously non-human, monstrous creatures.
Even on a similar early morning stroll, the shadows and light I saw were not the usual ones. The sky, the clouds, even the light of dawn.
I felt the coolness by the river.
If I lived near such a floodplain, I would feel anxious every time it rained, and the elementary school designated as an evacuation centre is not very far from the river. I wondered if it would function as an evacuation centre.
The comfort of living by the water is also hard to give up.
I wanted to go to the station to see the morning Bantan Line.
Additionally, even though I’m retired now, I still feel a selfish sense of familiarity with the people heading to work early in the morning. By 8 or 9 o’clock, I don’t feel that way at all.
I bought and ate a chocolate mint ice cream from the vending machine in the station waiting room.
That day’s stroll took nearly an hour round trip.
朝未だき。
今回は駅まで歩いてみた。
福崎は、すっかり「妖怪の町」になってしまった。
河童以外の「妖怪オブジェ」が以前よりも目立つ。薄闇の中で見れば、それなりにギョッとするのだが。しかし、こんな時間に、半裸の若い女性が片膝立てて座っているのかという驚きが主体。見るからに人間ではない異形のものには驚きは感じなかった。
早朝の同じようなぶらぶら歩きでも、見ている影や光は、いつものものではない。空も雲も、日の出の光さえも。
川の流れの傍では涼しさを体感した。
こんな氾濫原近くに住んでいたら、雨が降るたびに不安だろうし、避難所に指定されている小学校も、川から然程離れてはいない。それで避難所として機能するのだろうかと思いはしたのだが。
水辺に住む居心地の良さも捨てがたい。……
駅まで行ってみたかったのは、朝の播但線。
それに、朝早く勤めへ向かう人たちには、退職した今でも自分勝手な親近感を覚える。８時、９時台になると何も感じないのだが。
駅の待合室にあった自動販売機でチョコミントのアイスクリームを買って食べた。
この日のぶらぶら歩きは、往復で１時間近くになっていた。
