Fragile Heart

(続き)

This was the first sunny day in a long time.
I wanted to see the western sun hit the mountains of Konan.
However, many days had passed since I had so conceived the idea, and the new school year had begun at the university.
Years ago, when my wife and I were looking for a new house, we used to wander around, knowing that it was an unaffordable area for us.
I remember eating refreshments in the college cafeteria. In and out, in and out, free. It was peaceful.
But on this day, the streets and the gates were full of students. More than anything, I was afraid of the security guards I saw here and there. I am not an alumnus of the school, nor do I live in the neighborhood.
The atmosphere of Konan was very different from the one I remembered.

As I started walking westward, I felt a sense of relief when I saw the Hankyu bridge over the Sumiyoshi River, reminding me of the old song "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
However, an old cherry tree standing on the sidewalk had a sign announcing that it would soon be cut down. It had been eaten by insects and more than half of its trunk was hollow, and there was a fear that the tree might fall over.
Further west from the tree, I came across a monument that read "禍福無門" The history of the inscription reminded me of the flood damage in「細雪」.
There is no special gate for happiness or disaster. I understand that. However, I don't want someone to tell me that it is something that the person himself calls for.
It was also noted who wrote the characters.
Minister of the Interior Suetsugu _I see, he is the kind of person who would say something like that.
If anyone were to tell the people in the disaster area now that they deserve the damage, they would now voicing anger and protest.
But I wonder if that is really the case.
Self-responsibility, self-help efforts
Such words would spring up one after another.

Kobe has continued to plant trees and build erosion control weirs ever since.
Even so, it has suffered two major floods. Although the damage has been less than in the days of the disaster 禍福無門, the number of people who have died is not zero.

I went out for the first time in a long time to look at the quiet and peaceful scenery, but I felt depressed instead.
The view of the Rokko mountains from the Sumiyoshi River was beautiful.
However, many beautiful landscapes are only the result of disasters.
I will only remember that the Hankyu railway bridge and the cherry blossoms by the open main gate of the junior high school _ were beautiful.
