I hesitated until the last minute to go out into the city that day.
I had only seen the lighthouse two months earlier...
But after lunch, the sky was bright and
I wanted to see the lighthouse on a clear day.

On the way, I bought sweet chestnuts for my father's birthday celebration and as an offering for the anniversary of his death.
Sweet chestnuts in red bags, like those sold at festival night stalls in the old days.
I knew that they were sold all year round at a certain tropical fruit shop.
Just before heading there, I bumped into an old friend from elementary, junior high and high school.
I recognised him immediately because we had a drink together just the other day, but he looked older when I saw him today in a busy arcade street. I think that's the same for me, though.

The view of the sea from the 14th floor of the hotel was calm.
I used to be able to see the revolving light of the lighthouse of the first Kyomachi-suji hotel, if I climbed the hill near my parents' house. Sometimes my father was there beside me, sometimes my mother or sister.
Or that there was a friend I happened to meet in the arcades today.
There were still few buildings in the city to block the lighthouse's light.
With more and more tall buildings, even from the hills, the lighthouse's beams were no longer visible, and I left home.

From where in the old town can the light of the current second-generation lighthouse be seen?
Recalling the old faces of various people, I stared out at the slanting sunlight and the calm sea and sighed.
