Susuki is called silver grass.
When I said that, the reply came: ‘It looks more golden than silver.’
Once pointed out, it did seem golden too. If it looks like both gold and silver, then perhaps it is neither.
From there, the conversation turned to the highlands of Nara, often seen as a backdrop for portrait photography, and to the highlands of Hyogo Prefecture. Being places called highlands, there are no stations nearby, and without a car, they are difficult to reach. After the earthquake, fearing myself into a drinking binge, I obtained a driving licence, but driving simply wasn't for me. Since then, my licence has served only as identification. Having passed seventy and facing mandatory refresher courses for elderly drivers, I voluntarily surrendered it. Visiting the Hyogo highlands is now beyond me. As for the Nara highlands...
What I thought was susuki was actually pampas grass.
If it were the grasslands of South America, it wouldn't be much different from the Martian landscapes Curiosity shows us.
The scenery one individual can see is limited. The number of people one can meet and talk to is also limited.
Born into a small world, spending each day, seeing and hearing but a little, and then dying.
Beneath the bleak sky of Abeno Harukas, still, I walked alone through the vast expanses of my own personal “Nara”, “Hyogo”, “Brazil”, and “Mars”.
ススキのことをsilver grassと云うのです。
そう話すと、「銀というよりは金色に見えます。」と返ってきた。
言われてみたら金色にも見えてくる。金にも銀にも見えるのなら、そのどちらでもないのだろうけれど。
そこから人物撮影の場として屡々目にする奈良の高原のことや、兵庫県の高原の話になった。高原と呼ばれる場所だから、近くに駅はなく、車が無ければ行くことは難しい。震災後、酒浸りになるのを恐れて、運転免許を取得したが、自分には運転は向いていない。以来ずっと運転免許証は身分証明書でしかなかった。70歳を過ぎて、高齢者教習を受講しなければならないのを機に、自主返納した。兵庫県の高原にも、もはや行くことは叶わない。まして奈良の高原は…。
ススキだと思っていたものは実はpampas grass。
南米の大草原なら、Curiosityが見せてくれる火星と大差はない。
一個人が見ることの出来る風景は限られている。会って話が出来る人も限られた人数でしかない。
小さな世界に生まれて、毎日を過ごし、僅かばかりを見聞きして、死んでいく。
あべのハルカスの寒々とした空の下、それでも私は、手前味噌な私だけの「奈良」や「兵庫」、「ブラジル」、「火星」の広野をただ独り、歩いていた。
