Morning town walk

(続き)

Like in any town, I like to walk aimlessly, early in the morning.
The day before, I told the couple who own the inn that I was going out early in the morning.
They asked me what time I would get up, and I answered, 'About half past four. I'll be out at 5am,'
They replied. We are probably still asleep, so please go and unlock the door here. She explained to me how to unlock the door.

Wherever I walked, there was hardly anyone to be seen. Even if there were, I would only see their backs in the distance. I walk along empty streets and look at the buildings and the sky. It is no different from what I do every morning.
What was different was that on the way, I bought a can of coffee and a lacto ice cream with a crispy chocolate coating at the convenience store where I drank a highball the day before. I sat on a bench near the shop and drank the cold black coffee while looking at the sky. There were a number of large motorbikes parked around me, but I wondered where their owners were staying. I looked around but could not find any accommodation that looked like it.
It seemed like it had been a while since I had seen people much older than me occasionally stop, put their hands together and bow their heads. They didn't make a monetary donation, and they were different from the people in the atmosphere of those who gather at festivals. I guess they usually pray for something every time they pass by a temple or torii gate, and their heads are probably lowered. If this leads to that person's personal peace of mind, it seemed like good piety. I don't want others to force my faith, threaten me or control my mind.

After an hour's walk, I returned to the inn. The owner greeted me with a smile.
Breakfast at 7am, check-out at 9am and catch the train at around 1pm, but the heat had changed from the early morning and I had to take the train home early.
There was no place for me in the crowded Saturday tourist area.
